The phrase “the great outdoors” was coined for places like the Glen of Aherlow in County Tipperary. Framed by rugged mountains and named after the River Aherlow that weaves its way through the valley, the scenic glen is home to an array of outdoor activities including walking, cycling, horse riding and fishing. Historic landmarks and stunning viewpoints dot the landscape, while the quaint rural villages of Bansha and Galbally bookend the region. It’s an ideal spot to get away from it all, despite being only a 20-minute drive from the vibrant towns of Tipperary and Cahir. To the glen we go...

    Activities in the glen

You’ll find a multitude of walking trails in the Glen of Aherlow, ranging from easy loops to more challenging mountain hikes. The Ballinacourty and Woodland loops are forestry tracks suited to a gentle stroll, while Lough Curra and Lake Muskry are tougher lake walks that’ll take you up onto the Galtee Mountains, Ireland’s highest inland mountain range. Casual cyclists can enjoy two parallel roads that run the length of the glen and more adventurous mountain bikers can hit off-road trails. Bikes can be rented locally from BBikes. Is horse riding more your style? Hillcrest Equestrian Centre offers fun experiences in the area from trekking to cross-country for all levels of rider. And anglers, take note – you don’t need a permit to fish in the River Aherlow, where you’ll find brown trout and perch.

    Highlights of the glen

Christ the King is an unmissable statue that overlooks the valley and marks the entrance to the Glen of Aherlow Nature Park. It’s the main focal point in the region with magnificent views all around. Elsewhere, the Heritage Trail in the glen locates several interesting historic landmarks, including the sacred site of St Pecaun’s Holy Well, an ancient Celtic ogham stone, the 15th-century Franciscan friary of Moor Abbey, and the megalithic passage tomb known as Darby’s Bed. Accommodation-wise, a good choice is the Glen of Aherlow Caravan & Camping Park, which is picturesquely located in the heart of the valley. For a more luxurious option, rest and relax in the award-winning Aherlow House Hotel.
